The identity of this young man is unknown, but the gilded stucco medal he holds in his hands depicts Cosimo the Elder de' Medici. The portrait carries political value, exalting the Primus Pater Patriae: MAGNUS COSMUS / MEDICES PPP, as stated in the inscription on the medal. This was modelled on a coin minted between 1465 (the year Cosimo acquired the title) and 1469, when the same medal appeared in a miniature.
