The portrait was executed during the Duke and Duchess of Milan's visit to Florence, which was organised to strengthen the alliance with Lorenzo the Magnificent. Galeazzo Maria Sforza wears a blue brocade robe adorned with golden lilies, the emblem of the French royal house to which his wife was related. Lorenzo the Magnificent kept this portrait of Sforza in his own bedroom, paying homage to his ally.
