The Holy Family by Luca Signorelli

Video in Italian | Inside a perfect circle: the model for a whole generation of painters from Michelangelo to Andrea del Sarto and Raphael

A shape that anticipates the most famous of all the tondos: Michelangelo's Doni Tondo.

The Holy Family by Luca Signorelli (1487-88) served as a model for a whole generation of later artists such as Michelangelo, Andrea del Sarto, Raphael.

Giorgio Vasari says that the painter, born in Cortona in about 1445, was an illustrious pupil of Piero della Francesca. He was then involved in the construction of the Sistine Chapel in Rome by Pietro Perugino and from the end of 1499 he also took part in the decoration of the Cappella Nova or San Brizio, inside the Cathedral of Orvieto, one of the most beautiful example of Renaissance art ever produced.
