Pitti Wonder - The Weary Hercules at Pitti Palace

Fabrizio Paolucci, curator of classical antiquities, tells the story of this extraordinary colossus from the 2nd century AD as he launches ‘Wonder’, the series dedicated to the wonders of our galleries

What did it mean to rule in the 16th century?

For Cosimo I de’ Medici, the answer lay in this marble statue of Hercules: weary, broken, yet still standing after having borne the full weight of the world on his shoulders. An image of power as absolute responsibility, taking on the burden of the common good to the point of feeling its almost crushing weight.
