Uffizi. Refurbishment works in the Botticelli Rooms

The greatest masterpieces by the Florentine master are on display in a nearby room

Venus, Spring, Madonna of the Magnificat, Madonna of the Pomegranate and Pallas and the Centaur are displayed in room A9. The other paintings, like those by Filippo Lippi and Pollaiolo, have been moved to the museum’s first floor for the duration of the works.

The Botticelli rooms on the second floor of the Uffizi Galleries are closing for refurbishment work. The masterpieces by the Florentine Renaissance master, including his Venus and Primavera, are being temporarily relocated to the adjacent spaces facing the First Corridor.

Botticelli’s works were moved and reinstalled on 1 December in complete safety, and can already be seen again in their new, temporary location. From 2 December, in room A9, facing onto the Corridor with which the museum itinerary begins, visitors will encounter The Birth of Venus, Primavera, Madonna of the Magnificat, Madonna of the Pomegranate, and Pallas and the Centaur.

Botticelli’s other works, in addition to the masterpieces of his teacher Filippo Lippi including Madonna and Child with Two Angels (called the Madonna Lippina), the Virtues by Botticelli and Pollaiolo, and other major 15th-century paintings, have been moved, also temporarily, to the Galleries’ first floor (Rooms C6 to C11). These include Botticelli’s Adoration of the Magi, Calumny of Apelles, Portrait of a Man with a Medal of Cosimo the Elder, and Annunciation.

The need for the work in progress to upgrade and update the rooms’ plant and functions was established in 2023. The work is expected to take about six months: when it is completed, the spaces will once again be home to Primavera, Venus, and the other masterpieces by the great Florentine master.
