The white nylon tulle dress has oval horsehair appliques and is embroidered with laminettes, tinsel and sequins. The garment is based on a model by the stylist Jean Desses (1904-70) for autumn-winter 1951-52. The same model was replicated with a num- ber of variants also by the couturière Irene Galitzine (1916-2006).
While Italian ateliers at this time were still competing for the priv- ilege of replicating French models, 1952 also marked the country’s emancipation from French fashion thanks to the launch of Italian fashion in Palazzo Pitti’s Sala Bianca.
Donated by Maria Teresa Biancoli Gallotti, 1996
