Anghiari

Site of the battle between Florence and Milan

Anghiari

Anghiari sits on a hill in the upper valley of the Tiber in Tuscany. The town, with numerous buildings surviving from its medieval and Renaissance past, is a stage on itineraries unfolding amidst picture-postcard castles and landscapes. Florence defended itself against the armies of the Milanese invader on the plain before the town in 1440, and won the day. The event is commemorated in the Museo della Battaglia e di Anghiari and celebrated with a Palio race every 29 June.
